Documentary on Kings airs on UTV tonight
Five young aspiring TV makers have produced KINGS: FROM THE BOGSIDE TO THE BRIGHT LIGHTS a half hour documentary about Derry film maker Tom Collins and his film KINGS, which will be broadcast on UTV tonight (15 January) at 23.05.Their programme follows Tom Collins as he brings his landmark Irish language film KINGS to its premiere screening in Derry, having spent the last 12 months touring film festivals around the world including; Toronto, Cannes, Galway and the Hamptons.
The young producers - Ian Baxter from Belfast, Glenn Gallagher from Strabane, Joanna Harvey from Belfast, Victoria McCollum from Coleraine and Darren McMullan from Ballygawley - were selected from hundreds of applicants to participate in Skills Focus, a training scheme funded by UTV in association with Northern Ireland Screen. All 5 are now available for work.
Ian Baxter
Ian is originally from London but has lived in Belfast for the past 8 years. With a background in Drama, Ian brings a clear visual identity to his production work. Having spent 2007 gaining experience in features production, KINGS: FROM THE BOGSIDE TO THE BRIGHT LIGHTS is his first documentary credit as producer.
Darren McMullan
Darren has been involved in video production for around ten years now. He studied at the University of Wolverhampton, graduating in 2001. Since this time he has been working on a freelance basis. He has produced a number of corporate videos including a training video for BBC Information Services. He has also been involved in various outside broadcasts covering events and sporting occasions.
Joanna Harvey
Joanna began her career in television working as a series runner on LOOKING FOR LOVE for Waddell Media, a series of 6 programmes produced for BBC1 NI. She was then chosen as one of the five successful applicants to gain a place on Skills Focus training scheme. In this time she has worked as a researcher on a variety of UTV programmes including UTV LIFE, U CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE and TROUBLES.
Glenn Gallagher
In 2002 Glenn participated in a course in Digital Filmmaking at Filmbase, Dublin. During this time he worked on numerous short films as cameraman/producer acquiring fundamental industry skills. He went on to complete a HND in Media (Moving Image), through which he produced a short film ‘SIMON SAYS', which was selected for the Milton Keynes Film Festival. He then did a BA course in Film and TV production at Galway, and worked part-time as an assistant/runner for Besom Productions in Derry. He worked on Besom's documentary ‘THE HUNGER STRIKERS' which was transmitted on both BBC and TG4. For many years Glenn has worked on short films, including a five minute short piece for UTV's HOME scheme. Through the Skills Focus scheme Glenn secured a placement as a cameraman/editor with UTV.
Victoria McCollum
Victoria graduated from University of Ulster (Coleraine) in June 2007 with a First Class Honours in Media Arts. She then successfully gained a placement with UTV through the Skills Focus scheme. Victoria went to Athens to join the European Cinema team to make the closing ceremony film WHEN A PLACE BECOMES A CHARACTOR at Platforma Video Festival in Greece. She also made two 3 minute promotional slots for MTV Greece for Platforma Film festival. Since then she has submitted a short for the Bafta Orange competition and her short film SMOKING ON THE ROOF TERRACE has been short listed to the final eight for the UK Film Council / Northern Ireland Screen Digital Shorts Programme.
