Irish Cinema and Industry Events at the Galway Film Fleadh

The 20th Galway Film Fleadh, will take place from July 8 – 13, and over the six days will screen approximately 70 feature films, 25 documentaries and 100 short films. The theme of the festival this year is Music and Film and the eclectic week-long programme of events include world premieres, classic screenings, tributes, Irish and international documentaries, features and shorts.

As always, the Galway Film Fleadh is an avid supporter of indigenous Irish films and will world premiere a broad mix of Irish feature films including ALARM, a contemporary psychological thriller, directed by Gerry Stembridge, which tells the story of Molly who, after her father’s violent death becomes the victim of what appears to be a violent and personal vandetta; Ivan Kavanagh’s OUR WONDERFUL HOME, a film about the pressures of modern life and the affects on one family and KISSES, directed by Lance Daly which follows two ten year old kids who run away from dysfunctional homes onto the streets of inner city Dublin.

Other Irish features premiering are ANTON, an explosive and gripping thriller set in Northern Ireland in the 1970’s and VOX HUMANA (Notes for a Small Opera), directed by Bob Quinn, which is the music-based story of a homeless man and the 70 strong Galway Baroque Singers.

Irish features screening in the festival include Ian Fitzgibbon’s black comedy A FILM WITH ME IN IT which has been receiving great reviews since it premiered in the Edinburgh Film Festival; Martin Duffy’s SUMMER OF THE FLYING SAUCER as well as Northern Ireland set drama PEACEFIRE directed by Macdara Vallely and Rick Larkin’s romantic fantasy SATELLITES AND METEORITES which stars Amy Huberman.

Irish documentaries screening include SEAVIEW, directed by Paul Rowley and Nicky Gogan which takes an in-depth look at Mosney, a former holiday camp now a holding centre for asylum seekers and the stories held within; GABRIEL BYRNE – STORIES FROM HOME which is a revealing and evocative insight into the life and creative impulse of one of the world’s leading actors, the Dublin International Film Festival Audience Awards winners WAVERIDERS and DAMBE – THE MALI PROJECT and the arts-based documentary ABOUT BEAUTY.

This year the Irish Film Board will again host The Real Deal, a day of panel discussions. This year the three panels are Far Away, Up Close – Co-Production with Canada and New Zealand; The Global Cartoon Business and Undressing Hollywood.

Screen Producers Ireland will host a panel discussing the latest trends in children’s programmes, marketing and needs. The panel will be chaired by Cathal Gaffney, MD Brown Bag Films and in attendance will be Gary Pope, Director of Kids Industries, and Jens Bachem, Director of Digital Outlook.

Peter O’Toole is the subject of the Irish tribute and the Fleadh will screen a selection of his flms including JEFFERY BERNARD IS UNWELL, ROGUE MALE and GOODBYE MR CHIPS. Peter O’Toole will also take part in a public interview, which will give a wonderful insight into the life of this remarkable man.

To complement the Music On Film theme of this year’s Fleadh, the Big Screen in Eyre Square will host a selection of free best concert films ever made. One to note is the Kila concert film ONCE UPON A TIME, which will have its world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh.
