Olympic Boxer to Pack a Punch as the subject of new Irish Documentary

The Olympic bronze medalist Darren Sutherland is the subject of the new award-winning Irish documentary SAVIOURS which is set to open in cinemas across Dublin on October 3rd.

SAVIOURS, the moving debut feature film by Ross Whitaker and Liam Nolan is an intimate, gripping documentary following the lives of three young boxers from the Dublin boxing club, St. Saviours Olympic Boxing Academy.

The club is the setting to explore the life stories and dreams of the young Irish-Caribbean Darren Sutherland, Dubliner Dean Murphy and asylum seeker Abdul Hussain. The club is a safe haven amongst the dangerous flats of Dublin's north inner city, where, under the guidance of the club's canny coaches, the boxers fight for a better life both inside and outside the ring.

The documentary has been receiving critical acclaim and stellar reviews at home and abroad since it premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh last year. Here is what the critics are saying:

"SAVIOURS represents the best in bare-bones, small-scale filmmaking...." Chicago Tribune

"Rough hewn and rock steady, Saviours is a small miracle made with passion and dedication in lieu of a proper budget. Or indeed any budget. In a perfect world, it would this year's Once" Hot Press Magazine

"SAVIOURS packs as much of an emotional punch as Champ, Raging Bull and all the Rocky films put together" Irish Times

"This new Irish film packs a punch!" Irish Independent

"A natural and startling honest portrayal..." Film Ireland

"Ireland's answer to Million Dollar Baby..." Irish Daily Mail

"Inspiring, packed with personality, a winner" Sunday World

SAVIOURS, produced by Whitaker and Nolan for Street Films with funding from the Irish Film Board and distributed by Eclipse Pictures Ireland, will open in Cineworld (Parnell Street), The Light House Cinema (Smithfield), Vue (Liffey Valley), Movies @ Dundrum and UCI (Tallaght) on Friday 3rd October.
