IFB Funded Shorts Win at the Cork Film Festival

The 53rd Corona Cork Film Festival was a great success with four shorts funded by Bord Scannan na hEireann/ the Irish Film Board (IFB) winning awards.

FÉILEACÁN scooped the prize for Best Irish Short Film.  Written and directed by Cecilia McAllister for the Oscailt scheme, it tells the story of a young mother who has suffered a mental breakdown and tries to rebuild her relationship with her daughter but things don't work out the way she planned.  FÉILEACAN is the second short fiction piece for producer Bronagh McCartan with Lunah Productions.

Danann Breathnach's FOIREANN CODLADH picked up the Gradam Gael Linn for Best Short Film in the Irish Language.  This Oscailt short film, which also received a Special Mention in the Best Irish Short Film category, is a tale about a young businessman who retires to a quaint cottage in a sleepy village. It's in an idyllic and tranquil setting, something he's always longed for, but the quiet doesn't last long...   Aislinn Ní Chuinneagáin produced FOIREANN CODLADH with Newgrange Pictures.

The Claire Lynch Award for Best First-Time Irish Director of a Short Film went to Juanita Wilson's THE DOOR.  Produced by Louise Curran (Octagon Films), the film is based on the true story of a father and his young daughter in Russia in 1986.  It premiered as part of the IFB's Short Cut scheme at the Galway Film Fleadh earlier this year.

Padraig Fagan's THE ROOSTER, THE CROCODILE AND THE NIGHT SKY also got a Special Mention in this category.  Produced by Barry O'Donoghue of Barley Films, it is an animated tale of passion, loss, surreal comedy and explosive violence.  It also premiered at the Galway Film Fleadh earlier this year as part of the IFB's Frameworks scheme.
