Winner of €1000 Audio Visual Equipment Annouced
Last year Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board and PWC carried out a survey of the Irish audio visual sector to establish its size, character and value in order to put in place a strategy and plan for the future. The survey revealed that the Irish audio visual sector is valued at over €557.3 million, employs over 6,000 individuals and represents 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).To encourage participation the IFB ran a competition giving people a chance to win €1000 of audio visual equipment and we are now happy to announce that Ger Fitzgibbon from Limerick, a freelance writer and director, was the lucky winner of the prize.
Along with cameraman and editor Brian Scully, Ger set up Eyebright Media, where they co-produced and co-directed the documentary Up In Smoke - Ireland's Smoking Ban, as well as a number of educational DVDs.
Currently Ger is involved in Community Development work, where he has used documentary making as a tool for self-affirmation among disenfranchised young people. Ger also sees an important role for his film and documentary work in the defense of human rights, and plans to travel to Palestine later this year to observe and document people's experience there.
