Peidhleacán Solais selected to open 2009 Kinteca Series in Madrid
A short experimental film by 160 Muskerry students working with filmmaker Dónal Ó Céilleachair called PEIDHLEACÁN SOLAIS (Butterfly Light) has been selected to open the 2009 Kinteca Series on June 18th in Madrid.
The film will screen at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (MNCARS) with parallel screenings at the Centro de Arte, Dos De Mayo (CA2M) in Madrid.
Inspired by Stan Brakhage's historical film Mothlight (1964), Ó Céilleachair conducted cinema workshops in the five national schools of the Irish speaking areas of West Cork as part of the 2008 Súil Lán Film Residency at Ionad Cultúrtha, Baile Mhúirne. In the workshops 160 students (ages 5 up to 12) were given 24 frames (1 second long) of clear 35mm film each, which they decorated with local flora and the wings of deceased butterflies. By joining together each strip of film from the students the resulting film is 160 seconds long (5 minutes long projected at half-speed).
Some of the students will be featured on the TG4 Nuacht bulletin regarding the film at 6.45pm, Sunday, May 24th.
