The Tudors is back in Dublin to film the 4th and Final Series
US producers, the Showtime Network, gave the green-light to a further 10 episodes of this major US TV drama. This will be the fourth and final season. Filming began in Dublin on June 15th with Jonathan Rhys Meyers returning to star as King Henry VIII during his turbulent reign as King of England. This Emmy and IFTA award winning US series has shot on location in Ireland for the last three years and has been based at Ardmore Studios whilst also using many film locations around Dublin. Previous locations used by The Tudors include Christchurch Cathedral, Dublin City Hall and Kilmainham Jail. Filming takes place over five months. The series has an Irish budget of circa €20 million. 200 Irish cast and crew and 1500 film extras are employed on the production.
Recent improvements to the Irish tax incentive for film and television, Section 481, mean that this season will consist of ten episodes instead of eight installments as per last season, contributing a further boost to expenditure in the capital.
Two particular Dubliners have left their mark on the show. Costume Designer, Joan Bergin (The Field, My Left Foot), has already scooped two Emmys for her work on the series. Production Designer, Tom Conroy (Breakfast on Pluto), received a nomination at this year's Art Directors Guild for his design contribution.
Irish directors who have previously worked on the show include Dearbhla Walsh, Ciaran Donnelly, Brian Kirk and Colm McCarthy. Both Dearbhla and Ciaran are directing the fourth series.
THE TUDORS is produced by the Showtime Network in the US, and is co-produced by Morgan O'Sullivan and James Flynn of World 2000 Entertainment. It is an Irish/Canadian co-production.
