A Quiet Love to receive World Premiere at 2025 Doc Edge Festival

Posted: 9th May 2025

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland is delighted to congratulate Garry Keane, Curious North Productions and the team behind Irish documentary A Quiet Love, which has been selected to make its World Premiere at Doc Edge, New Zealand’s Academy Award Qualifying Festival, on 4th July 2025, as the Festival marks its 20th anniversary.

A Quiet Love captures the remarkable love stories of three Deaf couples through Irish Sign Language: a decades-long forbidden romance across a religious divide, an LGBTQI+ couple navigating parenthood with Deaf and hearing children, and a Deaf boxer and his hearing partner facing a life-altering choice. A Quiet Love is a cinematic celebration of resilience, connection, and enduring love; featuring an immersive soundscape. It is Ireland’s first feature film in Irish Sign Language, produced by a Deaf and hearing team and directed by Garry Keane. Keane’s previous feature, In the Shadow of Beirut, won three awards at Doc Edge 2023 including Best International Feature Film, which earned it qualification in the Documentary Feature category for the 96th Academy Awards.

Financiers for the documentary are Screen Ireland, Coimisúin na Meán and TG4 with impact support from Reach Deaf Services. Lead producer is Dublin-based Curious North Productions. Produced by Anne Heffernan and Seán Herlihy. Executive producers are Niamh Fagan and Proinsias Ní Ghráinne.

Doc Edge is an Academy Award-qualifying international documentary film festival held annually in Auckland, Wellington, and online nationwide. The 20th Doc Edge festival promises a diverse range of bold and impactful films, from New Zealand and around the world, covering climate change, social issues, human rights, and the arts.

A Quiet Love will be screened in Auckland (4th & 10th July) Wellington (19th July), Christchurch (19th July) and in the festival’s virtual cinema. For tickets visit docedge.nz.

A Quiet Love has also been shortlisted for a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award at the 2025 Global Production Awards in Cannes on 19th May 2025. The nomination is in recognition of the film team’s efforts to champion diversity on and off screen, creating an inclusive production environment for its Deaf and hearing crew and for creating opportunities for Deaf crew in an industry where the Deaf community has been historically underrepresented.
