Award-Winning Irish Film, Handsome Devil, Released on Netflix on 20 July

Posted: 5th July 2017

It has been announced that John Butler’s award-winning comedy/drama, Handsome Devil will be released on Netflix on 20 July.

Produced by Rebecca O'Flanagan and Rob Walpole for Treasure Entertainment, with support from Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, Handsome Devil is Butler's second feature film, following his hugely successful 2013 title, The Stag.

Starring Irish actors Andrew Scott, Moe Dunford, Amy Huberman and Ardal O'Hanlon alongside Fionn O'Shea and Nicholas Galitzine, the film follows the story of the unlikely friendship of boarding school roommates Ned (O'Shea) and Conor (Galitzine). Despite taking an instant dislike to each other, they are encouraged by their English teacher Dan Sherry (Scott) to find their own voices and defy the status quo of their rugby-obsessed school. As the two bond over music, an unlikely and inspiring friendship begins to blossom.

The film garnered widespread critical acclaim upon its release, with the Irish Times noting that “Butler has proved himself adept at the complex mechanics of the redemptive comedy.” Other critics hailed the film as “a deft and witty delight” and praised its nuanced representation of sexuality and its rejection of labelling.

Handsome Devil has received a plethora of awards since its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2016. The film won Best Irish Feature at ADIFF’s Dublin Film Critics’ Circle Awards earlier this year, as well as scooping the Best International Feature accolade at the Gasparilla International Film Festival in Tampa, Florida
