Colm Tóibín-Penned Return to Montauk, Released in Irish Cinemas Today, 6 October

Posted: 6th October 2017

Marking the first original screenplay from renowned Irish author, Colm Tóibín, Irish co-production, Return to Montauk, is released in Irish cinemas today, Friday, 6 October. Directed by Volker Schloendorff, the film previous screened in Competition at the 67th Berlinale earlier this year.

Return to Montauk centres on writer Max Zorn (Stellan Skarsgard), who comes to New York for the release of his latest novel. His partner Clara has been there for a few months in preparation for the event. However, Max is also yearning for another woman from his past, Rebecca. When he manages to find her again, they travel together to Montauk, the place that encapsulates their love. As Max’s increasingly autobiographical novel unfolds, he will have to accept that the past cannot be rewritten. They can return to the place of their romance, but can their love be rekindled? An Irish/German co-production, Irish producers on the film include Conor Barry and John Keville of Savage Productions.

The title, which was the closing film at this year’s Galway Film Fleadh has been described by RTÉ as “captivating” and “an exquisitely directed film of the highest calibre”, with critic Paddy Kehoe proclaiming it as his “film of the year.”

Return to Montauk is a Germany-France-Ireland co-production. The Irish co-producers are Conor Barry and John Keville of Savage Productions with funding from IFB, in association with Mike Downey and Sam Taylor at Film & Music Entertainment (IRE) Ltd.  The Delegate Producer is Regina Ziegler of Ziegler Film and it is also co-produced by Francis Boesplug for Pyramid Productions in France.

The film is released in Irish cinemas today by Wildcard Distribution.
