Connect with the Irish screen industry: Screen Ireland-supported industry events at the 34th Galway Film Fleadh

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland is proud to support the 34th Galway Film Fleadh and the line-up of industry panels, events and masterclasses taking place for emerging and established filmmakers and industry professionals throughout the festival’s run.

Apart from a diverse line-up across the film programmewith 13 Screen Ireland-supported feature films screening at the Fleadh along with the premieres of 11 Screen Ireland-supported short films – the industry line-up includes masterclasses, partnered events and the Fleadh Forum day on Thursday, 7th July.

Fleadh Forum – Thursday at 11am

The Fleadh Forum is curated by Screen Ireland and joined by a host of industry experts, with four separate panels covering TV drama co-production, using hit series Hidden Assets as a case study; distribution and the success of recent Irish cinema release, An Cailín Ciúin; audience development and harnessing new technology to find them; and the introduction of the National Talent Academy network, encompassing National Talent Academies for Film and Television, Animation and three Crew Hubs nationwide.

Masterclasses

Screen Ireland will support the Filmmakers’ Masterclass series at this year's Galway Film Fleadh. The annual masterclass series at the Fleadh’s industry section, Galway Film Fair, offers actors, directors and screenwriters a unique chance to learn from experts in their respective fields, in an intimate engaging environment.

Mike Newell will be the subject of this year’s Director Masterclass, while Vicky Krieps, fresh from her recent Best Performance win at the Cannes Film Festival, will be the subject of this year’s Actors’ Masterclass. Both masterclasses will be sponsored by Screen Ireland, while the Screenwriters’ Masterclass, hosting acclaimed Derry Girls screenwriter Lisa McGee, will be supported by Gréasán na Meán Skillnet.

Crew and Skills for the Screen Industry – Discussions and Events

Growing the Crewbase in Ireland Sustainably – Saturday at 2pm

The skills development arm of Screen Ireland will host two panel discussions focusing on the theme of "Growing the Crewbase in Ireland Sustainably". The event will take place on Saturday, 9th July 2022 at the Galmont Hotel, where the new Screen Guilds of Ireland / Screen Ireland Competency Framework for crew will also be officially launched at this event.

The first panel will discuss growing the crewbase with a focus on the value of the new competency framework for the development of crew; while the second panel will discuss growing the crewbase with a focus on wellbeing on set and positive work environments.

Both panels will be moderated by Elaine Geraghty (Managing Director Ardmore and Troy Studios) and the session will be introduced by Gareth Lee (Skills Manager at Screen Ireland).

Partnered Events

Screen Ireland is additionally delighted to partner with industry stakeholders and participate on several panels and industry-focused events at the Fleadh this year.

Greening Our Film Industry – Friday at 2.30pm

As part of the Screen Greening coalition, comprised of Screen Ireland, the BAI, Virgin Media Television and Screen Producers Ireland, industry panel Greening Our Film Industry will discuss the latest sustainability updates on Irish productions, and hear first-hand from key crew on their sustainability journeys. Culture Ireland and IFI International Networking Event – Friday at 4pm

On Friday 8th July, Screen Ireland will partner with Culture Ireland and IFI International as the two organisations host a networking session: an opportunity for Irish filmmakers, producers, festival programmers and resource organisations to engage directly, discuss future plans and projects and hear about festival planning timelines. TG4 and Screen Ireland Irish Language Fund – Saturday at 2pm

TG4 and Screen Ireland will welcome producers, directors and creatives to the announcement of a new Irish language development fund. The new fund is for producers and creators interested in developing drama and documentary projects.  This informal social afternoon is also an opportunity for those in the industry to meet or reacquaint themselves with the TG4 commissioning team, discuss ideas and hopefully sow the seeds for future creative relationships. Who Cares? Parenting and Caring in the Irish Screen Industry – Saturday at 11.30am

Hosted by Women in Film and Television Ireland and the Writers Guild of Ireland, the Screen Ireland-supported Raising Films Ireland will participate as a special guest on the yearly panel, which will discuss the issues facing parents and carers in the Irish screen industry. Find out more.

X-Pollinator Panel – Sunday at 1.30pm

Supported by Screen Ireland’s Stakeholder Funding Scheme and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, X-Pollinator is an initiative to help address the lack of gender diversity in the Irish screen industry. As part of X-Pollinator ELEVATOR, which identified and supported twenty diverse and emerging female and non-binary writer and directors, X-Pollinator will conclude the programme with an industry panel at the Galway Film Fleadh this year.
