Focus Shorts and Frameworks short film schemes are now open for applications

Posted: 13th December 2021

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland is delighted to announce that short film schemes Focus Shorts and Frameworks for live action and animation are now open for applications. Supporting new and emergiing filmmakers, both flagship short film schemes have a long tradition of showcasing and introducing Irish talent to audiences around the world.

Focus Shorts - Live Action

Focus Shorts is a short film scheme for the making of live-action, fiction films that act as a proving-ground for Irish creative talents aspiring to write, direct and produce films for the cinema.

In keeping with Screen Ireland’s commitment to Diversity, Inclusion and Gender Equality, Focus Shorts particularly welcomes teams with these aims at the heart of their applications. Authentic voices telling diverse stories by film-makers from a variety of backgrounds should be the lifeblood of the emerging film landscape in contemporary Ireland. Screen Ireland is excited to help make these new films happen.

Focus Shorts aims to encourage strong, original storytelling, visual flair, and production values appropriate to the big screen. It offers an opportunity for producers, directors and writers to work in a professional environment that will bring their experience up to a higher level and can be seen as a stepping stone for more ambitious projects.

Focus Shorts can be up to 10 minutes in length and receive a budget of up to €50,000.

The deadline for applications is 1pm on Friday, 25th February 2022, and applications are open now.

Frameworks - Animation

Frameworks, which is co-funded by RTÉ, is a flagship scheme for the Irish animation sector, and has produced award-winning films to a consistently high standard, including most recently Louise Bagnall’s Late Afternoon, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short in 2019. Projects selected for funding will combine creative exploration with an ability to appeal to a general audience, though not necessarily aimed at children.

Up to four Frameworks projects will be selected to go into production: up to two shorter 2 minute projects with a maximum budget of €20,000, where successful applicants who may require assistance in specific areas will be guided and supported by mentoring, and up to two 5 minute projects with a maximum budget of €70,000. Priority will be given to applicants who apply with the support of an established studio in order to deliver their film to the specification, budget and quality that this level of scheme demands.

The deadline for applications is 1pm on Friday, 4th February 2022, and applications are open now.
