Four inventive, original projects selected for Screen Ireland’s animated short film scheme Frameworks

Posted: 25th August 2026

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland is delighted to announce the four successful teams for the 2026 edition of its Frameworks animated short film scheme, in partnership with RTÉ.

Frameworks is the longstanding flagship scheme for the Irish animation sector, supporting high-quality and imaginative short animation films. The scheme has produced films that have gone on to major international success, including Academy Award nominations and World Premieres at major film festivals like Tribeca, SXSW, Annecy and Sundance. Earlier this year, John Kelly's Retirement Plan was nominated for Best Animated Short Film, while former Frameworks recipient Louise Bagnall, also an Oscar nominee for Late Afternoon, debuted her feature film debut Julián at the prestigious Annecy Film Festival and will soon present the film for its North American Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Emma Scott, Head of Audiences at Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, said:

Frameworks is always a joy to work on – the sheer array of imaginative and creative projects to choose from really drives home the standard of our incredible animation industry. It’s no wonder Ireland’s animators are so admired worldwide. We wish this quartet of films a wonderful journey as they enter production."

The successful projects and teams for the 2026 round of Frameworks are:

Wolf Wolf

Written and directed by Cora McKenna, produced by Alan Holly.

A wolf has an existential crisis which pulls them away from their pack and towards something unknown.

Empty Nester

Written by Joshua Brown, directed by Iobhar Stokes-Rodriguez, produced by Lauren Fee.

When the old man who feeds the pigeons each day is getting evicted, the pigeons step up to save him and the neighbourhood!

The Last Post

Written and directed by Chris Judge, produced by Brunella Cocchiglia.

A grumpy postman struggles to find joy in a seaside community when kindness is delivered to him in the most unexpected way.

The Hoard

Written and directed by Carol Freeman, produced by Chris Hees.

Trapped between thoughts of the past and future, a woman struggles to part with her overwhelming hoard of possessions – including a good-sized bag, an oversized blue fluffy coat, torn wrapping paper, foreign coins and a concert wristband.

Films from previous Frameworks rounds can be viewed now on Screen Ireland's Shorts Player.
