Posted: 10th September 2026

The shoot has wrapped on Mary Rose, the much-anticipated new feature from Academy Award-nominated An Cailín Ciúin director, Colm Bairéad, proudly supported by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland. Further cast details have also been revealed: previously announced Zara Devlin (Small Things Like These) is joined by Fiona Shaw (Sense and Sensibility, Killing Eve), Denise Gough (Andor, H Is for Hawk) and Barry Ward (Trespasses, Everybody Digs Bill Evans).

Based on an original screenplay by Bairéad and set in 1950s Ireland, Mary Rose follows Mary Kelly, who is left behind when her rebellious twin sister, Rose flees to England. Years later, an unforeseen encounter pulls her into a double life, forcing her to question her identity and the morality of the system that shaped her.

The film is produced by Cleona Ní Chrualaoi of Dublin-based Inscéal, the production company behind An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), and co-produced by Dries Phlypo, Erik Glijnis and Leontine Petit of APV Lemming in association with Helen Gladders of London-based Gingerbread Pictures. Executive producer for Screen Ireland is Niamh Fagan and executive producers for Film4 are Cate Kane and David Kimbangi.

The period film was shot on location across Dublin and Wicklow, Ireland over a nearly six-week period from July to September. Bairéad reunited with creatives from An Cailín Ciúin: Director of Photography, Kate McCullough (A Prayer for the Dying, Normal People) and Editor, John Murphy (Saipan, Frewaka) for the film. Also anchoring the creative team are Production Designer, Paki Smith (Steve, Small Things Like These), Costume Designer, Suzanne Keogh (Oddity, Obituary), Hair Designer, Sandra Kelly (Four Mothers, Normal People) and Make-up Designers, Barbara Conway (Flora and Son, Once) and Edwina Kelly (Christy, The Young Offenders).

Mary Rose is financed by Film4, Screen Ireland, Eurimages, Screen Flanders, BNP Paribas Film Finance and RTÉ with mk2 films financing through its slate deal with IPR.VC.

mk2 films is handling international sales, with Curzon and Break Out Pictures distributing in the UK and Ireland, Memento in France and Cinéart in Benelux.
