Lisa McInerney’s award-winning novel The Glorious Heresies to be adapted in upcoming TV series

Posted: 8th February 2025

Galway-based production company Danú Media has optioned the rights to Lisa McInerney’s The Glorious Heresies.

The Glorious Heresies, set in the gritty underbelly of Cork, Ireland, introduces a cast of richly drawn characters navigating love, crime, and family ties, all against the backdrop of a society in flux. It weaves together the lives of five interconnected characters, each struggling with personal demons, moral dilemmas, and the harsh realities of life in a city riddled with crime, addiction, and social unrest. The novel won the 2016 Desmond Elliott Prize for debut fiction, was shortlisted for Best Newcomer at the Irish Book Awards and won the Bailey’s Women's Prize for fiction in 2016. It was named a Book of the Year by both The Irish Times and The Guardian.

John Brady, CEO of Danú Media said:

"When we first read Glorious Heresies, we were immediately captivated by Lisa’s lyrical narrative. It felt fresh, bold and exactly what we were looking for. For us, character and story are key, and Lisa balances both delicatley in this unforgiving, raw, and sometimes comic love letter to Cork city. We’re incredbly excited and grateful to be trusted with this project, and we’re looking forward to working with Lisa on bringing this story to the screen."

Lisa, who will also be writing the series said:

"I am so excited to work with the Danú team on bringing this very Irish saga to the screen. It's such a privilege to be able revisit and reimagine this story for a new audience, and to be able to spend time again with my cast of misfits and chancers. I'm really looking forward to this new chapter."

The development of The Glorious Heresies is supported by Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland through the Creative Futures Slate Fund.
