Irish film God’s Creatures selected for World Premiere at Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes Film Festival

Posted: 19th April 2022

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland is delighted to congratulate the creative team behind Irish film God’s Creatures on its selection to Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

The film stars Emily Watson, Paul Mescal and Aisling Franciosi, and is directed by Saela Davis and Anna Rose Holmer. God’s Creatures is a powerful drama set in a windswept fishing village in Kerry, where a mother is torn between protecting her beloved son and her own sense of right and wrong. A lie she tells for him rips apart their family and close-knit community in this tense, sweepingly emotional epic.

Directors' Fortnight (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs) at the Cannes Film Festival is a parallel programme established in 1968 for singular and visionary contemporary cinema. In recent years, it has launched films from visionary contemporary filmmakers including Robert Eggers' The Lighthouse, Sean Baker's The Florida Project and Chloé Zhao's The Rider. Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson debuted his critically acclaimed second feature film, Garage, at Directors' Fortnight in 2007.

Irish producer Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly said about the selection:

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to premiere God’s Creatures at Directors’ Fortnight. It has been a joy to work with such a special and unique group of collaborators. Saela & Anna are visionary filmmakers who connected deeply and sensitively with Shane’s personal Irish set script. We’re also delighted to tell this special story with Emily, Paul, Aisling and all whose performances are both intimate and iconic. We look forward to sharing our film with audiences this year.”

Written by Shane Crowley, God’s Creatures is based on a story by Shane Crowley and Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly, who is producing with her company Nine Daughters.

The Nine Daughters production is produced by Fodhla Cronin O’Reilly. It was developed with the support of Screen Ireland, BBC Film and A24. It is co-financed by A24, BBC Film, Screen Ireland and the Western Region Audiovisual Producers Fund/WRAP. A24 controls worldwide rights.

24 feature films will debut in the 54th Cannes Directors’ Fortnight line-up this year, which runs from 18th to 27th May, 2022.
