Irish film Handsome Devil announced for Glasgow Film Festival 2017 Opening Night Gala

Posted: 5th January 2017

The European premiere of John Butler’s coming-of-age film, Handsome Devil, will take place on the opening night gala of the Glasgow Film Festival (GFF) on 15 February. The festival—now in its thirteenth year—is one of the UK’s leading film festivals, showcasing the best of local and international cinema from all genres.

Starring Irish actor Andrew Scott alongside rising stars Fionn O’Shea and Nicholas Galitzine, Handsome Devil sees O’Shea head up the cast as gawky, sixteen year-old Ned, a bullied outsider forced to share a room with Conor (Galitzine); a new boy and star athlete. Set in an all-boys Irish boarding school where rugby is perceived as the epitome of stereotypical masculinity, at first the unlikely duo seem destined to remain enemies until an English teacher, Mr Sherry (Scott) encourages them to find their own voice. As the two bond over music, an unlikely and inspiring friendship begins to blossom.

While the full line-up for GFF won’t be revealed until 18 January, it was previously announced that Niall McCann’s documentary, Lost in France, will be screened at the prestigious festival on 21 February. Exploring the rise of Scotland’s independent music scene in the 90s, led by cult label Chemikal Underground, the Delgados, Bis, Mogwai, Franz Ferdinand, Arab Strap and other seminal musicians and bands, Lost in France paints an intimate portrait of friendship, creativity and incredible music.

Lost in France is produced by Nicky Gogan at Still Films and Paul Welsh at Edge City Films and funded by the Irish Film Board/Bord Scannán na hEireann (IFB) and Creative Scotland. Handsome Devil is produced by Rebecca O'Flanagan and Rob Walpole for Treasure Entertainment, with support from IFB.

The Glasgow Film Festival runs from 15–26 February and more info is available here
