Irish Talent Invited to Join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Posted: 4th July 2019

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland is delighted to congratulate Robbie Ryan (The Favourite, American Honey), Louise Bagnall (Late Afternoon), Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk, The Killing of a Sacred Deer), Nuria González Blanco (Late Afternoon), Gerry Shirren (Song of the Sea) and Vincent Lambe (Detainment) on their invitations to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in their respective branches of acting, cinematography and short films/animation.

The invitations mark yet another wave of success for Irish talent, as three of the invitees received Oscar nominations at this year’s Academy Awards for Screen Ireland-supported projects, and have built their careers over time working in the Irish film industry.

Robbie Ryan’s invitation comes after his Oscar nomination this year for Best Cinematography for Irish-produced The Favourite, as well as his critically acclaimed collaborations with directors Andrea Arnold and Ken Loach, including Irish film Jimmy’s Hall.

Louise Bagnall is the Oscar-nominated writer and director of Late Afternoon, a Screen Ireland Frameworks animated short film, which Nuria González Blanco produced for Cartoon Saloon. Screen Ireland had previously funded Louise’s first and second animated short films, Colour Contamination and Donkey.

Barry Keoghan won accolades for his international breakthrough performance in the Screen Ireland-funded film, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and since then has played roles in celebrated international productions like Dunkirk and the HBO series Chernobyl, as well as the famine revenge thriller and Irish box office hit, Black ’47.

Gerry Shirren is managing director and producer at Cartoon Saloon, where he executive produced the Screen Ireland-supported animation The Breadwinner, which received an Oscar nomination in 2017 for Best Animated Feature.

Vincent Lambe is a writer/director who received an Oscar nomination this year for Best Live Action Short Film for Detainment.

The Academy announced yesterday that 842 new members from 59 countries have been invited to join, 50 percent of whom are female and 29 percent are people of colour.
