John Carney’s Flora and Son to receive World Premiere at 2023 Sundance Film Festival

Posted: 4th January 2023

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland is delighted to congratulate John Carney and Treasure Entertainment as the Irish director’s upcoming feature film, Flora and Son, has been announced to receive its World Premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival this January.

Screening in the Premieres section, Flora and Son will join a line-up of 110 feature-length films, representing 28 countries at the acclaimed Utah film festival. The Irish film is written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker John Carney (Sing Street, Once) and stars Eve Hewson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Orén Kinlan and Jack Reynor.

Single mom Flora is at war with her teenage son, petty thief Max. Encouraged by the police to find Max a hobby, she rescues a beat-up guitar from a dumpster and finds that one person’s trash can be a family’s salvation.

Sundance is renowned for its recognition of new filmmaking voices and its competitive selection process, and the festival has acted as a powerful platform for Irish film in previous years, including recent Sinead O’Connor documentary Nothing Compares (2022), Herself (2020) and John Carney’s debut feature, Once (2007).

Flora and Son was shot on location in Dublin last summer, and is produced by Rebecca O’Flanagan and Robert Walpole for Treasure Entertainment, Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron for Likely Story and Distressed Films. The film is supported by Screen Ireland in association with FilmNation, Fifth Season, Likely Stor and Distressed Films. Sales are handled by FilmNation.

The 2023 Sundance Film Festival will take place from January 19th – 29th, 2023 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Utah. You can find more information about the full line-up here.
