Little Museum of Dublin and Dublin Port Announce New Short Film Competition in Association With Screen Ireland

Posted: 16th August 2018

The Little Museum of Dublin and Dublin Port have announced a new Irish film prize with a commissioning fee of €20,000 to produce a new short film that will be seen by over 100,000 visitors to the Little Museum in 2019.

Named The Dublin Port Short Film Prize 2019, this new commissioning project in association with Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland will give artists and filmmakers a unique platform to showcase their work at the museum in telling the story of Dublin.

Up to eight minutes long, the “Port Short” will celebrate the city of Dublin, highlighting aspects of our culture and heritage that separate the city from other capitals in Europe. Both enlightening and entertaining, the film will enhance public understanding of the city’s evolution as well as provide an amusing introduction to Dublin today.

For each of the next five years, in partnership with the Little Museum, Dublin Port will commission a short film about Dublin on the theme of port — river — city, in keeping with its arts commissioning programmes to date, which include Dublin Ships, Port Perspectives and Starboard Home, as well as the restoration of the Diving Bell on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay. “Port Short” further fulfils Dublin Port’s commitment under its Masterplan 2040 to achieving closer integration between the Port and the City and people of Dublin through cultural, community, environmental and heritage initiatives that enhance the strong ties between the port, river and city.

Sarah Costigan, Deputy Director, The Little Museum of Dublin, said: “The Little Museum of Dublin is incredibly proud to partner with Dublin Port on the Port Short Film Prize. We are delighted to have the opportunity to commission an artist to create a film which tells the story of Dublin as a port city. We are encouraging artists to apply by the deadline of September 13th.”

Eamonn O’Reilly, Chief Executive, Dublin Port Company, said: “Dublin Port is delighted to announce Port Short 2019. This is the first of five short film commissions for The Little Museum of Dublin, which we hope will give visitors to Dublin a unique insight into the City and its relationship with the Liffey and the Port.  We are grateful to Screen Ireland for supporting our collaboration with the Little Museum of Dublin and we look forward to fostering the creative talents of local up and coming movie makers.”

Mags O'Sullivan, Marketing Executive, Screen Ireland, said: “Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland is delighted to partner in association with The Little Museum of Dublin and the Dublin Port Company on this fantastic short film competition. Short films are a crucial proving ground in the career of every filmmaker and open up a world of exciting opportunities and possibilities. At Screen Ireland, we are looking forward to seeing filmmakers bring to life their own unique vision of Dublin, as the city provides a fascinating platform to showcase stories that will enlighten and entertain global audiences.”
