Principal Photography Begins in Ireland for Joshua Oppenheimer’s Musical ‘The End’ As NEON Announces New Cast Members

Posted: 23rd March 2023

NEON has announced that Michael Shannon (George & Tammy, upcoming The Flash), Moses Ingram (Ambulance, The Queen's Gambit), Bronagh Gallagher (The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Brassic), Lennie James (Fear the Walking Dead, Blade Runner 2049) and Tim McInnerny (Notting Hill, Game of Thrones) have joined Academy Award® Nominated Director Joshua Oppenheimer’s golden-age musical about the last human family, The End. Academy Award® Winner Tilda Swinton and George Mackay were previously announced and will star in the Screen Ireland supported film.

It is Oppenheimer’s first fiction feature after the Oscar-nominated documentaries The Act Of Killing (2012) and The Look Of Silence (2014).

The musical revolves around a wealthy family surviving in a palatial bunker, two decades after the world has ended. As a young woman who, having barely survived, manages to find her way in, the family first celebrates their survival, then struggle to come to terms with unspoken blame over leaving loved ones and their own diffuse regret for contributing to the world's end. Oppenheimer has said the music is inspired by the “unearned optimism” of Broadway's Golden Age.

Principal photography has begun in Ireland and will continue through the spring in Italy and Germany.

The film is proudly supported by Screen Ireland, along with the Danish Film Institute, Vestdanske Filmpulje and FilmFyn, in Denmark, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and MDM Fund in Germany, the Italian Ministry of Culture (MIC) and Sicily Film Commission in Italy, the UK Global Screen Fund and SFI and Film i Skåne in Sweden. The pan-Nordic Fund Nordisk Film & Tv Fond and the European fund Eurimage are also on board. The international co-production is co-financed by NEON.

Final Cut for Real’s Signe Byrge Sørensen and Oppenheimer are producing with Wild Atlantic Pictures, The Match Factory, Dorje Film, Moonspun Films and Anagram co-producing.

Scandinavian Film Distribution will distribute in Nordic territories. The Match Factory is handling international sales.
