Screen Ireland Congratulates Element Pictures as The Favourite Wins a Record-Breaking Ten BIFAs

Posted: 3rd December 2018

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland congratulates the team behind the Element Pictures-produced, The Favourite, following its record-breaking win at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), where it took home ten major accolades including Best Independent Picture, Best Actress (Olivia Coleman) and Best Director (Yorgos Lanthimos).

The title also won Best Screenplay (Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara) and Best Supporting Actress (Rachel Weisz) at last night’s ceremony, which followed on from the BIFA Craft Awards — announced last week — where The Favourite took home five awards including Best Cinematography (Robbie Ryan), Best Casting (Dixie Chassay), Best Costume Design (Sandy Powell), Best Make Up & Hair Design (Nadia Stacey) and Best Production Design (Fiona Crombie).

Congratulating Element Pictures, Screen Ireland Chief Executive James Hickey said: “This is an extraordinary achievement for Element Pictures and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe and all the team at Element.

“We are proud to have supported Element down through the years on major Irish films such as Room, The Lobster and The Guard and we are delighted to see an Irish production company considered among the best in the world. We have high hopes for further international recognition for Element Pictures, as awards season progresses. We are also particularly proud of Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan who has built a very strong slate of work over the last number of years and is very deserving of this honour.”

Also at last night’s awards, Irish actress Jessie Buckley was presented with the Most Promising Newcomer for her performance in Beast, while Alessandro Nivola picked up an award for best supporting actor for his role in Sebastian Lelio's Disobedience, also produced by Element Pictures.

The Favourite was developed under Screen Ireland's Company Development Initiative (CDI) slate funding scheme.

The Favourite is written by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara and is produced by Ed Guiney and executive produced by Andrew Lowe for Element Pictures. Other producers include Ceci Dempsey, Lee Magiday and Yorgos Lanthimos. The film is an Element Pictures/Scarlet Films production for Fox Searchlight, Film4 and Waypoint
