Posted: 9th March 2020
Two Screen Ireland-supported short films, Welcome to a Bright White Limbo and A Better You, have made the Official Selection for the 19th annual Tribeca Film Festival. Setting a record with over 6,100 submissions, the final festival programme includes 64 diverse and captivating short films from 20 countries around the globe.
Both short films premiered at the Cork Film Festival in 2019, and were funded by Screen Ireland as part of its Focus Shorts and Real Shorts funding schemes. They will receive their international and US Premiere at the prestigious New York-based film festival, founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff.
Welcome to a Bright White Limbo, directed and written by Cara Holmes, will screen as part of the festival's No Surrender documentary shorts line-up: docs concerning courage and conviction.
Produced by Zlata Filipovic, Welcome to a Bright White Limbo combines documentary and dance performance in a visually arresting film that dives into the mind and creative process of Oona Doherty's award winning dance show, Hope Hunt.
A Better You, directed and written by Eamonn Murphy, is selected in the strand Out of this World for sci-fi shorts, and is produced by Quintin Ahern for Army of Id. Living in a dystopian, neo-steampunk world, a shy young man named Douglas (Seán T. Ó’Meallaigh) invests in a customizable carbon clone to help him win the girl of his dreams (Hannah Mamalis).
In recent years, Irish short films have had a consistent presence at the Tribeca Film Festival across narrative, documentaries and animation. Now in its 19th edition, the Tribeca Film Festival has become one of the most important and well-respected film festivals in the world, and will take place from 15 - 26 April.
