Screen Ireland Supported Masterclasses at the 35th Galway Film Fleadh Featuring Carol Morley and Matthew Modine

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland (Screen Ireland) is delighted to support the Filmmakers' Masterclass series at this year's Galway Film Fleadh through the Skills Development Events Funding Scheme. The annual masterclass series at the Fleadh’s industry section, Galway Film Fair, offers screen industry professionals a unique chance to learn from experts in their respective fields, in an intimate engaging environment.

Screenwriters Masterclass with Carol Morley:
Saturday, 15th July 2023, 10:00-13:00 - The Galmont Hotel

BAFTA-nominated writer-director Carol Morley will be the subject of this year's Writers Masterclass. Morley is known for her startling originality and versatility, has an impressive filmography that showcases her unique storytelling abilities. Her notable feature films include Out of Blue (2018), a gripping noir set in New Orleans with an ensemble cast featuring Patricia Clarkson, James Caan, Jacki Weaver, and Jonathan Majors; The Falling (2014), an intriguing drama starring Florence Pugh in her acting debut alongside Maisie Williams and Greta Scacchi; and the thought-provoking works Dreams of a Life (2011) and The Alcohol Years (2000).

Morley’s latest feature film, Typist Artist Pirate King (2022), explores the fascinating real-life story of artist Audrey Amiss through a captivating road trip narrative. With Monica Dolan, Kelly Macdonald, and Gina McKee in leading roles and Jane Campion as executive producer, Typist Artist Pirate King is a compelling cinematic experience. The film will have its Irish Premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh on Saturday, 15th July at 5:30pm in the Pálás Cinema.

This masterclass will be facilitated by Irish award-winning writer and story consultant Mary Kate O'Flanagan, who works with writers in Ireland, the UK, the US, South Africa, and across Europe. O'Flanagan works in the film and television industry as a credited co-writer and an uncredited script doctor.

Actors Masterclass with Matthew Modine:
Saturday, 15th July 2023, 14:00-17:00 - The Galmont Hotel

Award-winning actor Matthew Modine will take part in an inspiring session of the Actors Masterclass. Modine is best known for his iconic role in Stanley Kubrick’s Academy Award-nominated film, Full Metal Jacket (1987). He has also appeared in a variety of other films, including The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admission Scandal (2021), Married to the Mob (1988) and Birdy (1984). Modine returns to the Netflix global phenomenon, and Emmy and SAG Award-winning series, Stranger Things (2016-present), reprising his role as ‘Dr. Martin “Papa” Brenner’ in Season 4. The show is critically acclaimed and has become the most watched English-language series in the world.

Next month, Matthew will star in the latest feature from acclaimed director Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer, opposite Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr. and Florence Pugh. Modine also recently finished filming two movies; Hard Miles (2023), directed by R.J. Daniel Hanna, and Retribution, directed by Nimrod Antal and starring Liam Neeson, a long-time friend of Modine’s. Cinco Dedos Peliculas, Modine’s production company, recently produced a beautiful, animated feature film, My Love Affair with Marriage, which premiered at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival and is currently screening at festivals around the globe.

Matthew Modine will attend this year’s Galway Film Fleadh for the World Premiere of his upcoming film, The Martini Shot on Thursday, 13th July at 9:30pm in the Town Hall Theatre. This existential drama follows Modine, as an ailing movie director as he begins to shoot what he believes to be his final work of art. What starts out as a normal movie, ends up being an exploration of mortality and one’s profound effect on the world.  Filmed in Ireland and directed by Stephen Wallis, this film has an abundantly rich cast including, John Cleese, Derek Jacobi, Stuart Townsend and Fiona Glascott.
