Screen Ireland Supported Masterclasses at the 36th Galway Film Fleadh Featuring Tim Roth and Anthony Chen

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland (Screen Ireland) is delighted to support the Actors and Directors Masterclasses at this year's Galway Film Fleadh. The annual masterclass series at the Fleadh’s industry section, Galway Film Fair, offers screen industry professionals a unique chance to learn from experts in their respective fields, in an intimate engaging environment.

Tim Roth is a distinguished British actor known for his unforgettable characters across independent and major studio films. Roth was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer in his film debut The Hit and gained worldwide recognition for his roles in Quentin Tarantino’s including his portrayal as Mr.Orange is Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and The Hateful Eight.
Roth’s performance in Rob Roy earned him a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Other notable works include, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, Robert Altman’s Vincent and Theo in which he portrayed Vincent Van Gogh, The Incredible Hulk, Youth Without Youth, and the TV series Lie To Me. He made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed film The War Zone, starring Ray Winstone which premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews and played at the Cannes Film Festival and Toronto Film Festival.
Roth’s latest film, Poison, will compete in the Peripheral Visions Competition at the Galway Film Fleadh. Directed by Désirée Nosbusch, Poison explores the reunion of an estranged couple, Lucas and Edith, at their child’s grave. The film will be screened on Saturday, 13th July 2024 at 18:00 in Pálás Cinema, with Tim Roth in attendance.

Directors Masterclass with Anthony Chen

Saturday, 13th July 2024, 14:00-16:30 - The Galmont Hotel
Anthony Chen is an award-winning writer, director, and producer from Singapore who has garnered international acclaim and made an indelible mark on the world of cinema with his poignant storytelling. His debut feature, Ilo Ilo, won the prestigious Caméra d’Or at the Cannes International Film Festival 2013, making him the first and only Singaporean director to receive this honour. The film also secured 40 international awards, including four Golden Horse Awards. Chen’s other notable works include Wet Season which premiered at TIFF in 2022.
Chen’s latest film, The Breaking Ice, his first Chinese-language film made in China, premiered at Cannes International Film Festival in 2023, and will have its Irish Premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh on Friday, July 12 at 8:00pm in Pálás Cinema. Set in cold wintry Yanji, a town on China’s northeastern border, The Breaking Ice follows the blossoming relationship between three young adults in their twenties. It is a lyrical, delicate poem about alienation and the nostalgia of youth.
Drift, his English-language debut, premiered at Sundance 2023 and will be screened on Sunday, 14th July 2024 at 2:30pm in Pálás Cinema. The film stars Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo as Jacqueline, a young refugee who lands alone and penniless on a Greek island. Struggling to survive and cope with her past, she begins a friendship with a rootless tour guide, and together they find the resilience to forge ahead. The screenings of The Breaking Ice and Drift will be followed by a post-show discussion with Anthony Chen.
Anthony Chen’s Directors Masterclass is presented in collaboration with the East Asia Film Festival Ireland (EAFFI).
