RTÉ announces second season of BAFTA nominated series The Dry

Posted: 6th April 2023

Fís Eireann/Screen Ireland is delighted to congratulate the creative team behind RTÉ and ITVX's The Dry, which has been renewed for a second season.

RTÉ, in partnership with ITV, has today announced the commission of a second season of the series for RTÉ and ITVX, which will be produced by Element Pictures, in association with Fís Eireann/Screen Ireland and ITV Studios.

Nancy Harris, screenwriter of the show, for which she has recently received a BAFTA Television Craft nomination in the Writer: Comedy category, said:

I’m so thrilled about this second season of The Dry and to be getting to bring more of the Sheridans back to the screen.

It’s an absolute joy to be back working with this incredible ensemble cast and director Paddy Breathnach, and I’m excited about where the show is going to go this season. The characters are all deepening and developing and they all have challenges - it’s going to be quite the rollercoaster, and not just for those who are trying to stay sober."

The first season of The Dry followed Shiv Sheridan (Roisin Gallagher) as she returned to Dublin after years of partying in London, sober and full of good intentions - but being back with her family made staying on ‘the dry’ much harder than she expected. It aired on RTÉ earlier this year and attracted 600,000 viewers on the RTÉ Player, where all episodes are currently available to watch.

The Dry also stars Oscar nominee Ciarán Hinds, Pom Boyd, Siobhán Cullen, Moe Dunford and Adam Richardson. All episodes were written by Harris, with Paddy Breathnach directing.

The second series will pick up seven months after the first season, with the Sheridans in their new normal. Shiv’s been sober, celibate, and solvent for six months and is determined to achieve sobriety and cut toxic influences from her life. While giving up alcohol remains achievable, the character will have to establish if she needs to also give up her family. Roisin Gallagher will return as the character of recovering alcoholic Shiv Sheridan, alongside regular cast members from the first series. Further casting details will be confirmed in due course by RTÉ.
