Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Simon Harris, and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Helen McEntee, attended the 44th British-Irish Council Summit meeting in Wales last week, which focused on the creative industries across the shared islands of Britain and Ireland.

The British-Irish Council (BIC) held its 44th Summit meeting on Friday 5 December 2025, hosted by the Welsh Government in the Vale of Glamorgan, Wales. The theme of the Summit was ‘A Creative Future: Unlocking the Potential of the Creative Industries Across These Islands.’ The meeting was chaired by the Rt Hon Eluned Morgan MS, Prif Weinidog Cymru (First Minister), Welsh Government.

The Summit plenary focussed on Member Administrations’ respective screen sectors. Leaders discussed the importance of the sector to the Creative Industries, both culturally and economically, as well as the opportunities and challenges facing the sector, and efforts by administrations to support the industry and those working within it. Council members reflected on significant recent developments within their administrations and discussed a number of domestic and international topics of mutual interest.

Désirée Finnegan, Chief Executive of Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, said:

"Screen Ireland was delighted to participate in the 44th British-Irish Council Summit this week, which focused on unlocking the potential of the creative industries across the shared islands. As Ireland’s leading co-production partners, together we draw on long-standing creative relationships, strongly linked networks of screen talent, and a shared foundation of cultural values. By sharing insights and expertise with each other, Screen Ireland believes there is significant potential for the shared islands to collaborate more as international leaders in screen production."

The British-Irish Council (BIC) is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1998 under Strand 3 of the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement. Comprising the Government of Ireland and the UK Government, along with the devolved administrations of the United Kingdom, the Council aims to promote collaboration, dialogue, and cooperation on matters of mutual interest and shared concern. The BIC serves as a platform for discussing key issues and strengthening relationships between all participating administrations.
