The Element Pictures-produced, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, is released in Irish cinemas this Friday, 3 November. Featuring a stellar Irish and international cast which includes up-and-coming Irish actor Barry Keoghan alongside Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman, the film soared to the top of the US Independent Box Office following its release last week; garnering widespread critical acclaim in the process.
Rolling Stone called the film an “arthouse thriller” that is in equal parts “profoundly disturbing” and “demonically funny.” Vulture wrote that the cinematography is “exquisitely icy and built on long, slow pushes and pulls,” while the LA Times praised Farrell’s “soulfully stoic performance” and Keoghan’s “positively skin-crawling” turn as Martin. Following its world premiere in Cannes — where it took home the Best Screenplay accolade — The Killing of a Sacred Deer was hailed as “a high point of the festival” and particular merit was placed on Keoghan’s performance, with the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke hailing it as his “international breakthrough.” Critics also praised Lanthimos’ complex and nuanced direction, observing how the film is one of the best films that this world-class director has ever made.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer, sees Colin Farrell starring as Steven; a charismatic surgeon forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart when the behaviour of a teenage boy (played by Keoghan) he has taken under his wing takes a sinister turn. Nicole Kidman stars as the wife of Farrell's character, in the film which is produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures. Lanthimos co-wrote the film alongside Efthimis Fillippou, with whom he previously collaborated on 2015 title, The Lobster.
The film is financed by Film4 and New Sparta Films along with the Irish Film Board. The project was developed by Element Pictures with support from Film4. HanWay Films is worldwide sales agent with A24 on board as US distributor following its successful release of The Lobster last year.
The film hits Irish cinemas this Friday, 3 November.
