Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board (IFB) congratulates the team behind Element Pictures' production, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, which has been selected to screen in competition as part of the Official Selection at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, the film boasts an A-list cast including Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman and Alicia Silverstone, alongside Irish actor, Barry Keoghan. The Killing of a Sacred Deer marks a reunion between Farrell and Lanthimos, having previously worked together on The Lobster, which was awarded the highly coveted Jury Prize at the prestigious festival in 2015.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer sees Farrell starring as Steven; a charismatic surgeon forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart when the behaviour of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing takes a sinister turn. Nicole Kidman stars as the wife of Farrell's character, in the film which is produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures.

Speaking about the news, James Hickey, IFB Chief Executive said:

"We are delighted that The Killing of a Sacred Deer has been selected for competition at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. The film features Irish actors Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan, working with director Yorgos Lanthimos.

"It marks the return of Irish producers Element Pictures to competition in Cannes after the success of The Lobster, also directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Colin Farrell in 2015. Congratulations to Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe and all the team working on the film on the selection for competition."

Producer Ed Guiney said:

"We are thrilled to be back in Cannes with Yorgos and Colin following the success of The Lobster two years ago. Yorgos is truly one of the most talented and visionary film makers working anywhere at the moment and Cannes is the perfect place to launch his new film to the world."

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is co-written by Lanthimos and Efthymis Filippou, who, alongside Guiney and Lowe all worked on 2015's The Lobster—Lanthimos' critically acclaimed film set in a futuristic dystopia.

The Lobster won the Jury Prize in Cannes in 2015 and was recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Filmed in Co. Kerry and creatively developed and produced by Element Pictures with production funding from the IFB, The Lobster features Colin Farrell alongside Rachel Weisz. Farrell's performance as the lonely David recently saw him nominated for a Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) Golden Globe earlier this year.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer is financed by Film4 and New Sparta Films along with the IFB. The project was developed by Element Pictures with support from Film4. HanWay Films is worldwide sales agent with A24 on board as US distributor following its successful release of The Lobster last year.

The 2017 Cannes Film Festival marks the seventieth year of the world-renowned festival and will run from 17 – 28 May.
