Following its US release, Yorgos Lanthimos’ psychological thriller, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, produced by Dublin’s Element Pictures has topped the US Independent Box Office, receiving unanimous critical acclaim in the process. The film, which stars Irish actors Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan alongside the Academy Award-winning Nicole Kidman, took $114,585 in its four L.A. and New York locations — which Deadline reports as a very strong start ahead of the title’s expansion into top markets next weekend.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer, which was awarded Best Screenplay at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, sees Colin Farrell starring as Steven; a charismatic surgeon forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart when the behaviour of a teenage boy (played by Keoghan) he has taken under his wing takes a sinister turn. Nicole Kidman stars as the wife of Farrell's character, in the film which is produced by Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures. Lanthimos co-wrote the film alongside Efthimis Fillippou, with whom he previously collaborated on 2015 title, The Lobster

The film has been well-received by the critics; with Rolling Stone calling it an “arthouse thriller” that is in equal parts “profoundly disturbing” and “demonically funny.” Vulture wrote that the cinematography is “exquisitely icy and built on long, slow pushes and pulls,” while the LA Times praised Farrell’s “soulfully stoic performance” and Keoghan’s “positively skin-crawling” turn as Martin.

The film is financed by Film4 and New Sparta Films along with the Irish Film Board. The project was developed by Element Pictures with support from Film4.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer will be released in Irish cinemas on November 3.
