Sustainability Advisor Initiative for Film & TV Production - Pilot

Overview of the Fund 

Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland is offering the support of a Sustainability Advisor to Screen Ireland-supported live action scripted features and TV drama projects.

The aim of the funding is to support the requirement of the productions to complete the carbon calculator and implement a carbon reducing plan and sustainability plan on the production. 

The duties covered will include but are not limited to: 

  • Completion of a Carbon Calculator and implementation of measures that reduce the carbon footprint on the production. 

  • Analyse key areas of carbon emissions and implement a strategy for areas of reduction including energy use, waste management, recycling and travel. 

  • Work with Heads of Departments on initiatives that can be implemented across the production. 

  • To support the production’s adherence to Screen Ireland’s Sustainability Standards: Live Action

  • To oversee a productions application to Screen Ireland’s Sustainability Innovation Fund

Recording of the measures in the form of a report or ‘case study’ will be submitted after the production has wrapped. The case study should be allowed to be made public and shared with with future productions at an agreed time with the production company. The grant will be split into two strands.

Strand 1:

Productions and coproductions filming in Ireland for less than 3 weeks will be limited to €3,000 per project

Strand 2:

Productions and coproductions filming in Ireland for more than 3 weeks will be limited to €5,000 per project.

 

Work on the production will not be able to go ahead until the application has been returned and approved by Screen Ireland. The production will invoice Screen Ireland for the fund amount upon approval.

Screen Ireland Focus shorts can now also apply for a grant limited to €500 to assist with the costs of engaging a Sustainability Advisor.

 

Sustainability Advisor Role and Duties

Pre-production:

  1. The Sustainability Advisor will discuss the sustainability goals with the producer/s and devise a plan for implementing various initiatives that would like to be achieved during filming, including a plan for materials after wrapping. The plan will be explained in a basic document that can be used by the production team to begin implementing.  

  2. The production will also set up the Carbon Calculator and the production office and producers will be given a demonstration by the Sustainability Advisor on how to use the calculator.  

  3. The Sustainability Advisor will discuss the implementation of the sustainability plan with the production team and troubleshoot any issues that may have arisen. The advocate will also examine the Carbon Calculator, ensuring it is being filled in correctly and when necessary.  

  4. The Sustainability Advisor will also organise with the production/AD departments the requirements that they will need when on set during filming e.g. quotes from Cast/Crew, video content, photo opportunities, stats/materials that will aid the case study. 

Shoot:

  1. The Sustainability Advisor will work across briefing for crew on the agreed sustainability plan for production. Assisting with questions and advice on substantiality initiatives throughout the various departments. 

  2. The Sustainability Advisor will assist with the set up of recycling stations, clear waste disposal  

  3. The Sustainability Advisor will ensure that any plans for wrap are well known and the correct procedures are in place to implement.  

  4. The Sustainability Advisor will review the carbon calculator again and ensure that the information is correct along the timeline of production. 

Wrap:

  1. The Sustainability Advisor will work with production on striking plan and recycling where possible.

  2. The Sustainability Advisor will connect with the production on what can be shared.

Delivery:

Screen Ireland require sign on for the individual who will perform the role. The requirements for delivery are as follows:

  • Completion and results of Carbon Calculator

Key deliveries will include a case study which will include: 

  • A report outlying initial plans made with the producer/s and details of successful and unsuccessful initiative taken during production.  
  • Promotional material including any photographs or video of initiatives in action including quotes from cats and crew
  • Full report from the carbon calculator and its progression and final results.
