Irish TV Production
Over the last number of years, Screen Ireland has demonstrated its significant commitment to TV drama and animation. In 2021, local TV drama production spend increased by 40% from 2019, showcasing the impact of increased funding and support. Since Screen Ireland’s introduction of development funding for TV drama in 2015, TV drama spend has increased by 145%. Upcoming Screen Ireland-supported TV drama in 2022 and beyond shows no signs of abating, with series like Holding, The Dry and North Sea Connection making waves with Irish and international audiences this year.
The Irish animation sector is recognised as a global leader and has been in rapid growth for the past decade – almost quadrupling in size to 2019, with production figures showing that Irish animation accounted for almost 50% of all production spending in the country. With major global players like four-time Academy Award nominated studio Cartoon Saloon, 9 Story / Brown Bag Films, Boulder Media, and Giant Animation, the commercial and critical success of Irish animation is due to a mixture of business acumen, state support via the state tax incentive Section 481, a skilled and talented workforce, and a strong reputation for storytelling and visual artistry.
